Experts from UCLA & USC to Join SoCal Connected in Egypt Coverage

This Friday evening, as part of its expanded coverage of the crisis in Egypt, KCET will broadcast a new special from SoCal Connected: "Egypt on the Edge". The special will air from from 8:00-9:00 P.M.

SoCal Connected anchor Val Zavala and correspondent Brian Rooney will discuss the unfolding Egyptian crisis with two experts:

  • UCLA professor Dr. Khaled Abou el Fadl, one of the world's leading authorities on Islamic law and Islam, and a prominent scholar in the field of human rights. His most recent works focus on authority, human rights, democracy and beauty in Islam and Islamic law.  His book, The Great Theft, was the first work to delineate the key differences between moderate and extremist Muslims, and was named one of the Top 100 Books of the year by Canada's Globe and Mail (Canada's leading national newspaper).  His book, The Search for Beauty in Islam: A Conference of the Books, is a landmark work in modern Muslim literature.
  • Professor Andrew Lih from the USC/Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism. Lih is a new media researcher, consultant and technology author. He was previously an assistant professor of journalism and new media at the Hong Kong University Journalism and Media Studies Centre.

BBC Newsnight will follow the SoCal Connected special from 9:00 P.M.-9:30 P.M.
Concluding Friday's news coverage will be a live broadcast of Al Jazeera English News from 11:00 P.M.-12:00 A.M.
