KCET Honors Independence Day with 4th of July Marathon

Get ready for an exciting 4th of July on KCET! This year we will be honoring Independence Day and celebrating the holiday with Southern California viewers through a variety of war-themed programming specials that will air throughout the day. From a special episode of "California's Gold with Huell Howser" to an account of the D-Day invasion, KCET will offer a full day of compelling television.

Memory of Forgotten War” (2013) - Tues., July 4 at 1:00 p.m.

This documentary conveys the human costs of military conflict through deeply personal accounts of the Korean War (1950-1953) by four Korean American survivors.

Sands of War” (2015) - Tues., July 4 at 1:30 p.m.

Using both current and rare archival footage, this film recounts the forgotten story of the Desert Training Center.

Maggie’s War” (2012) - Tues., July 4 at 2:00 p.m.

James Megellas, affectionately known as “Maggie,” led H-Company of the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment through some of the most horrific battles of World War II.

Eagles of Mercy” - Tues., July 4 at 3:00 p.m.

A tale recounting the early hours of D-Day, June 6, 1944 as two young American medics with the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles" parachuted into France, and soon found themselves trapped in a 12th-century Norman church in the small village of Angoville-au-Plain.

America’s Finest Ambassadors: Our Armed Forces” - Tues., July 4 at 4:00 p.m.

In every war that the U.S. has been engaged in since World War I, our service men and women have befriended children of the allies, as well as children of the enemy, during and after these wars.

California's Gold with Huell Howser “Aircraft Carriers” (2008) - Tues., July 4 at 7:00 p.m.

Huell Howser visits the USS Midway in San Diego Harbor and the USS Hornet in Alameda, to see static displays of aircraft and weaponry, and to review archival film from prior service of the carriers.

Escape from Firebase Kate” (2015) - Tues., July 4 at 8:00 p.m.

This documentary is the compelling story of 26 U.S. soldiers who were forced to abandon Firebase Kate and to escape through a jungle full of thousands of NVA soldiers during the Vietnam War in 1969.   

Canine Soldiers” (2016) - Tues., July 4 at 9:00 p.m.

A documentary exploring the intimate bond between military working dogs and their handlers, combat soldiers who make life-and-death decisions based on the instincts and behavior of the dogs who lead their patrols.

Return to Normandy” (2016) - Tues., July 4 at 10:00 p.m.

A group of World War II veterans with mixed emotions are invited on a life-changing trip to attend the 70th anniversary celebration of their invasion of D-Day in Normandy, France.

Four-Four-Two, F Company at War” - Tues., July 4. at 10:30 p.m.

The 442nd Regimental Combat Team was an infantry regiment in the United States Army comprised of Americans of Japanese ancestry. The 442nd fought in Italy and France during World War II against the German Army.
