PBS SoCal, KCET and Link TV to Provide Election Day Coverage on Nov. 6
The Public Media Group of Southern California, Southern California's flagship PBS organization formed by the merger of PBS SoCal and KCETLink, announced the midterm election-day coverage viewers will find across its content channels PBS SoCal, KCET and Link TV on Tuesday, November 6.
PBS SoCal will present over four hours of live election night coverage of the 2018 Midterm Elections via "PBS NewsHour" starting at 5:00 p.m. PT. The special broadcast will be anchored by managing editor Judy Woodruff, with a panel of studio guests. Joining "NewsHour’s" coverage remotely will be PBS NewsHour White House correspondents at the White House, in the field and in Washington. The special will also include reporting throughout the night on local and state elections in coordination with local PBS and NPR stations. In addition to its broadcast on PBS stations nationwide, "NewsHour’s" special will stream on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Ustream. "NewsHour’s" 6:00 pm daily broadcast will be updated at 7:00 p.m. prior to the start of the evening’s special. Coverage will extend online and on social beginning at 8:00 a.m. on November 6. Additionally, PBS SoCal will host 3 minute station breaks at 8:57 p.m. ET, 9:57 p.m. ET and 10:57 p.m. ET when it is clear what the balance of power will be in the Senate and the House. PBS SoCal will also be focusing on social channels Facebook and Instagram to feature first time student voters throughout the day.
KCET will host "BBC World News" live coverage and offer viewers two full hours of election coverage from Anchor Katty Kay starting at 6:00 p.m. PT. Along with coverage from Washington D.C., the BBC will also be gauging reaction from around the world and analyzing the significance of the results to the wider international community. Kay will be hosting the special coverage with Christian Fraser. A panel of alternating analysts and correspondents in the field will weigh in on the results throughout the night. The BBC’s flagship U.S. newscast "World News America with Katty Kay" at 5:00 p.m. ET, broadcasting on BBC World News TV and public television in the U.S., will be getting reaction on the day both within and outside America. The 24/7 global news network BBC World News TV will begin coverage from 9:00 a.m. ET along with full news and analysis throughout the day on BBC.com, the BBC News app, social media outlets and on BBC World Service radio broadcasts on public radio stations in the U.S.
On the local front, KCET’s award-winning "SoCal Connected" will offer up live reporting via social media on KCET’s Instagram platform from various polling places in Orange County. Producers from the series will spend the day visiting various polling places in Orange County, giving updates every two hours. One minute hits on Instagram will start at 8:00 a.m. PT and run throughout the day until 5:00 p.m.
Additionally, KCET’s online viewers can look forward to the return of online voter resource "Ballot Brief," a one stop digital destination where Californians can find a selection of videos, articles and explainers that break down what voters can expect to find on their election ballots this season. One of the highlights of the website is “Props in a Minute,” a series of one-minute video explanations to help voters understand the 11 complex propositions on California’s ballot. Former Univision national correspondent Hena Cuevas runs voters through the key points of each proposition, utilizing fun graphics and easy-to-understand language. Sponsored by Los Angeles’ Sheppard Mullin law firm, each video concludes with what a “yes” or “no” vote will mean.
On the national front, Link TV will host live midterm election night special from "Democracy Now!" As polls close around the country, Amy Goodman, Juan González and Nermeen Shaikh will be joined by The Intercept’s Jeremy Scahill to host a rolling roundtable discussion with guests across the country. In addition to real-time election returns, they will focus on some of the nation’s most contested races and ballot initiatives. A record number of women and people of color are running for every level of elected office. They’ll also be examining the issues and movements at the heart of these midterm elections and the state of U.S. democracy two years into the Trump presidency. With control of Congress at stake, this award-winning team of fearless independent journalists will also be streaming live from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. ET in the embed below.
