Get Ready for the Elections with Political Docs on Youth, Health, Power, the Latino Vote and More
This October, a group of special political documentaries is airing on KCET and PBS SoCal to spark thoughtful conversations before Nov. 3. The programs deal with the power of youth in democracy, the history and legacy of Prop 187, the impact power has on each person’s health and the story of how one angry man launched a nationwide tax revolt that continues to this day.

"187: The Rise of the Latino Vote"

Proposition 187 was a California ballot measure passed in 1994 that sought to deny public services to undocumented immigrants. While it was meant to keep the “immigrant threat” at bay, it mobilized non-immigrants and immigrants in Latino communities and their allies in a political awakening that transformed the state’s electoral politics.
"The First Angry Man"

Howard Jarvis and his 1978 ballot initiative, Proposition 13, changed everything in California and beyond. “The First Angry Man” unpacks the dramatic campaign that slashed property taxes in California, leading to the collapse of the great public ambitions of postwar America and launched a nationwide tax revolt that continues unabated today. In the 40 years since Proposition 13, the nation has witnessed historic growth in economic inequality and the unraveling of America’s safety net.

"Power and Health" examines the role of power in our society and how it can be reshaped through community, belonging and inclusion in order to reshape our health.
